Pass along Panama’s first city. Watch the ruins of what was once the only
city in Panama’s Pacific side. It was founded on August 15, 1519 by the
Spanish conquistador Pedro Arias de Ávila. The city was destroyed by a
devastating fire, when the infamous Henry Morgan sacked it on January 28,
Casco Antiguo was established on January 21, 1673, as the second city in
Panama. It was built following the near-total destruction of the original
Panamá city, Panamá Viejo in 1671. Nowadays it still maintains and keeps its
original architecture and plazas. In 1997, it was designated a World
Heritage Site by the UNESCO.
The best views of the city’s skyline can be seen from the Causeway. Prepare
for your second splash! While in the water, you will be at the entrance of
the Panama Canal in the Pacific side. Take a look at the Bridge of the
Americas and observe large ships waiting for their turn to transit.
Drive along the administrative offices of the Panama Canal. The Panama Canal
Administration Building was inaugurated on July 15, 1914, exactly a month
before the Canal itself. Since then, this legacy from the past has continued
to dominate the Balboa area from atop its rolling hill.
